The Association of Biochemistry Educators (ABE) Virtual Summit promotes professional development, sharing of education best practices, scholarship, and networking for health professions educators from schools of medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry. The featured plenary speaker is Mike Todorovic, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine at Bond University (Gold Coast, Australia). With the theme of "Ascending to New Heights: Innovations in Foundational Science Integration", the ABE Virtual Summit will provide you with new teaching techniques, ideas, and resources through the plenary session, workshops, and short talks.

Keynote Speaker

Dr Mike Todorovic is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Bond University (Gold Coast, Australia). He has developed an impressive reputation for his ability to communicate the complexities of the human body across a range of traditional and social media platforms - reaching over 10 million people every month. He is well known for his medical education YouTube channel, Dr. Matt and Dr. Mike, with over 35 million views and half a million subscribers. His podcast, of the same name, is in the top 1% most shared podcasts globally and is a Top 10 Medicine podcast on both Spotify and iTunes with over 2 million downloads. He has worked extensively on radio and television, with over 150 ABC Radio call back segments and multiple television shows, including being a lead scientist on the National Geographic docuseries, 'Limitless' with Chris Hemsworth. 

 He has won multiple awards for his teaching and engagement, including a citation for outstanding innovation and scholarship, and the Pro-Vice Chancellors Staff Excellence Award for Engagement. He has been awarded over $1.3 million in research funding and published over 25 peer reviewed articles and textbook chapters.

              Educator Masterclasses

              The purpose of a 45-minute Educator Masterclass is to instruct attendees on a specific topic in an interactive format. The exact format for the session is chosen by the session leader(s) (i.e., module, workshop, discussion), as long as more than one-half of the time is used for interaction, active learning, and discussion (breakout rooms can be used).The topic should be aligned with the Virtual Summit theme and can include but is not limited to innovations in instructional methods, curriculum development, technology, student assessment, professional development, student support, or leadership.

              The Program Committee strongly encourages submissions from multi-institutional and inter-professional teams; submissions from schools of pharmacy, dentistry, and other health professions in addition to medicine; and presenters/teams that include junior faculty, women, faculty at undergraduate institutions, and those who are underrepresented in science and medicine. The Program Committee also strongly encourages submissions from those who are underrepresented in our organization, including gender expansive or nonbinary individuals, people living with disabilities, and those with identities that include American Indian/Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander, African American/African/Black, Middle Eastern/Southwest Asian/North African, and Asian/Asian American.

              Criteria for review:

              • Importance/Significance of the Topic: Does the topic of the session address a significant issue?
              • Appropriateness of Topic:
                • Is the session topic aligned with the ABE
                  Virtual Summit theme?
                • Does the session address an issue that will be of interest to attendees at the Virtual Summit?
                • Are the proposed session objectives feasible in the time permitted?
              • Approach: Does the proposed session adequately address the stated issue?
              • Clarity: Is the session well thought out and clearly presented in the abstract?
              • Plan to Promote Discussion/Interaction: Does the session present a clear and adequate 
                plan to promote discussion and interaction among attendees?
              • Intended Outcomes: Does the abstract outline clear outcomes that align with session plan?
              • Generalizability/Transferability: Can information learned at the session be transferred to other settings or institutions?

                Education Innovations Sessions

                The purpose of an Education Innovation Session is to introduce attendees to a novel education approach in a 10-minute talk. The topic should be aligned with the Virtual Summit theme and can include but is not limited to innovations in instructional methods, curriculum development, technology, student assessment, professional development, student support, or leadership.

                The Program Committee strongly encourages submissions from multi-institutional and inter-professional teams; submissions from schools of pharmacy, dentistry, and other health professions in addition to medicine; and presenters/teams that include junior faculty, women, faculty at undergraduate institutions, and those who are underrepresented in science and medicine. The Program Committee also strongly encourages submissions from those who are underrepresented in our organization, including gender expansive or nonbinary individuals, those living with a disability, and those with identities that include American Indian/Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander, African American/African/Black, Middle Eastern/Southwest Asian/North African, and Asian/Asian American.

                Although submission from teams is encouraged, only 1 person from the team will present at the Virtual Summit. All other members of the team will be listed as co-authors in the program.

                  Submission Instructions

                    • All abstracts must be submitted via the online form.
                    • References are NOT required for this submission.
                    • All presenters listed must register for the meeting by April 1, 2024. 
                    • Any presenter not registered will not be shown in the program.
                    • Sessions not accepted for talks/workshops may be invited as poster presenters
                    • Submissions received after Feb. 9, 2024, will be considered for Virtual Posters ONLY

                  Asynchronous Virtual Posters

                  Virtual Posters will be available for the meeting.  Abstracts that are not selected for a talk may be given an opportunity to submit a PDF poster for the website-available to conference registrants.  Author name, and poster title and then a link to the PDF poster. It will be a restricted page on our website and the link will be shared with conference registrants.
