PLENARY SESSION: Emotional and Cultural Intelligence: Essential Skills for Health Professions Educators

Subha Ramani, MBBS, MPH, MMEd, PhD, FAMEE

Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School ; Assistant Director for Global Collaborations, Brigham Education Institute, Brigham and Women’s Hospital;

Past President of AMEE, the International Association for Health Professions Education

Health professions educators often practice in diverse professional settings, teach learners from multiple learning or societal cultures, and interact with peers representing a variety of professional and sociocultural perspectives. For successful educational practice in a multicultural world, emotional intelligence (EI) and cultural intelligence (CQ) are essential.  The 4 core domains of EI competencies include: self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and relationship management. CQ goes beyond cultural competence and represents the capability to function and relate effectively in culturally diverse situations.  Core capabilities include CQ drive, knowledge, action and strategy. In this session, we will analyze core attributes of EI and CQ; discuss common challenges that educators and educational leaders experience; and describe strategies to enhance individual skills. We will conclude by discussing the importance of emotionally and culturally intelligent individuals as agents of change in transforming the cultural intelligence of the organization within which they are situated.

Objectives

1. Gain knowledge regarding the core attributes of EI
2. Apply EI competencies to enhance own educational practice
3. Analyze the core capabilities of cultural intelligence
4. Discuss strategies to advance as culturally intelligent educators and leaders
